#MeToo

As a #DadOfDaughters, I have committed myself to raising these three women in a world that seems to grow more hostile to them. I prepare them, and guide them. I am not overly religious, but I think of this passage each time my little loves walk out to the bus stop, and, yes, I call them, ‘My loves’.

“Behold, I send you forth as sheep in the midst of wolves…”

As I looked for the exact words, I read the second part of the verse.

“… Be ye therefore wise as serpents and harmless as doves.” (Matthew 10:16)

To fight the wolves, I share wisdom with my doves. I have already begun having the “talks” with my girls. Some boys and men will call you a ‘slut’ or ‘whore’. We call the ones who do, ‘Mr. Small’.

Some boys and men will minimize you and demean you. That’s Mr. Small, too.

Some boys and men will hit you, punch, or grab you. Mr. Small wears many masks, but inside his nature is the same.

As you recognize the different ways Mr. Small tries to hide, you will get better at picking him out, but there is no easy way through this. This requires constant vigilance. I work to share wisdom with them, and I wish they didn’t need these lessons . . .

And when all else fails . . . all three of them train in karate, and they have since they were six.

Be kind to each other, and remember that#YouAreNotAlone
I don’t know your story, but #IBelieveYou
I am a man, and #ISupportYou
I am disgusted by bullies, abuse, and cruelty. #DadOfDaughters
